Policy Fellow
Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI)


The Policy Fellow will work with CSPI’s policy team and will advocate for improved local, state and federal food and nutrition policies, and engage organizations, health professionals, academics, and concerned citizens in adopting and supporting nutrition policies.

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) led efforts to win passage of the Nutrition Labeling and Education Act, Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act (to improve school food), Food Safety Modernization Act, Menu Labeling, and Food Allergen Consumer Protection Act.  The Policy Fellow will work with CSPI’s policy team and will advocate for improved local, state and federal food and nutrition policies, and engage organizations, health professionals, academics, and concerned citizens in adopting and supporting nutrition policies. 

This position is a paid, 12-month fellowship and reports to the Senior Policy Associate.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    Support initiatives to drive market-facing levers and solutions, including public food purchasing (procurement) policies, to create a food environment that supports, rather than undermines, healthy eating.
    Cultivate support for nutrition policies from health professionals, organizations, coalitions, university faculty, and concerned citizens.
    Research and write reports, fact sheets, correspondence, social media, and other advocacy materials.
    Provide technical assistance and strategic advice to state and local advocates and policymakers.
    Represent CSPI in coalitions and meetings.
    Identify and analyze federal, state, and local legislation, regulations, and other policies.
    Assist with other projects, as needed.

Qualifications

    Master’s degree (MS, MPH, MPP) in health, policy, or nutrition or Bachelor of Science and 3 years of policy or government experience.
    Commitment to CSPI’s work and mission.
    Outstanding research and writing skills with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret articles from professional journals.
    Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
    Excellent judgment and consistent professionalism, with the ability to take responsibility for multiple projects.
    Intellectual agility and the ability to operate on deadlines and as part of a rigorous and fast-paced team.
    Ability to engage internal and external stakeholders in a persuasive, credible, and professional manner.
    Proficiency with MSOffice applications, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.  Familiarity with social media and other web-based advocacy tools.
    Ability to work additional hours as needed.
