HAF Director of Public Policy 


The Director of Public Policy (DPP) will primarily be tasked with providing research, writing, and analysis support for HAF’s policy priorities and initiatives, both nationally and in select states.  The DPP will build relationships with other advocacy and lobbying organizations, strategically assess various congressional offices, committees, and caucuses and continue established initiatives with federal and state agencies.  The DPP will work closely with the Executive Director, Director of Government Relations, and senior staff in developing advocacy strategies for HAF’s foreign and domestic policy issues.  


The Role


Research, Analysis, and Writing


1. Research and analyze key domestic and foreign policy issues, ranging from human rights and religious freedom to immigration and the environment

2. Research and analyze key state-level issues in select states pertaining to hate crimes prevention, religious liberty, education, and commemorative opportunities

3. Develop clear, well-reasoned positions and recommendations both in writing and verbally

4. Draft policy briefs and position papers on a range of foreign and domestic issues

5. Draft and send press releases as needed

6. Regularly write blogs and op-eds in support of various initiatives


Policy Strategy


1. Work with Senior Directors and Director of Government Relations to develop long term, tangible goals for foreign, domestic, and state-level policy priorities

2. Create and regularly update tiered lists of Congressional offices that HAF should “target” for both foreign and domestic priorities goals

3. Maintain and regularly update policy records for Congressional offices on key issues


Additional Responsibilities


1. Maintain attendance at key fora including issue-based think tanks, coalitions, interagency meetings, federal agencies, and relevant government offices.

2. Assist in development of issues, briefs, and fact-sheets for advocacy events

3. Works with other senior staff to manage and delegate follow-up from advocacy events

4. Enter contacts into Salesforce

5. Assist on various projects as needed


Required Skills and Experience


1. Bachelor’s degree (required), Master’s or graduate degree preferred.  Degree in Law, Political Science, International Relations, Human Rights, or related field preferred but not required

2. 1-3 years work experience preferred but recent graduates with a Master’s degree or higher will be considered

3. Strong research, writing, and analytical skills

4. Strategic thinker with experience developing policy and advocacy plans and initiatives

5. Ability to communicate effectively and advance the organization’s positions in meetings and other settings

6. Organized and able to handle multiple projects simultaneously

7. Flexible and willing to provide input and/or assist with projects and initiatives that are not necessarily within the public policy arena

8. Works well in a close-knit team environment, but can complete tasks independently when necessary

9. Ability to build strategic relationships and work collaboratively with NGOs and coalition partners on a range of issues

10. Legal background a plus
