Massachusetts Director
Education Trust

The Education Trust, one of the nation’s premier advocacy organizations working to improve educational opportunity and raise achievement for low-income students and students of color, seeks a Massachusetts Director.

This role will support the Massachusetts Education Equity Partnership, a diverse partnership of Massachusetts civil rights, social justice, community, family, and educator advocates working to advance educational equity in the Commonwealth. Based on the interests, opportunities, and needs identified by partners, the Massachusetts Director will provide convening, policy, and advocacy support to the partnership and will work to elevate and enact partnership-identified priorities.

Major Responsibilities

Cultivate and expand membership in a diverse partnership of Massachusetts advocacy organizations and stakeholders working to increase educational opportunity and achievement among historically underserved students.
Regularly convene and facilitate the partnership to identify shared priorities and plan for action to advance those priorities. Priority areas and actions will be based on local opportunity and context, but should reflect key equity-advancing issues such as: accountability and public reporting; evidence-based school improvement; resource equity; teacher diversity and quality; access to high-quality early childhood education; access to and success in rigorous coursework; effective, equitable discipline and student supports; and successful transitions from K-12 to college and careers.
Create advocacy collateral and tools (letters, op-eds, briefs, etc.) designed to advance partnership priorities.
Support partnership members in taking concrete, strategic advocacy actions (providing testimony, meeting with state policymakers, designing and executing communications campaigns, stakeholder mobilizations, leadership development, etc.) to advance partnership priorities.
Generate visibility for the partnership and its priorities through convenings, media work, and other communications efforts.
Identify and cultivate in-state funding relationships and secure funding for the partnership to supplement existing funds for this work.
Manage at least one additional team member to engage in policy and data analysis as well as partnership support.
Ensure partnership participation in an Ed Trust-led multi-state network of state equity coalitions, such as in-person meetings and webinars.
Share developments, strategies, tools, and lessons learned with Ed Trust colleagues to improve organizational knowledge and effectiveness.

Qualifications and Experience

At least 7 years of experience and a demonstrated track record of advocating for opportunity and achievement for low-income students and students of color
Strong relationships with leaders in Massachusetts’s advocacy, education, and policy worlds, and the ability to leverage those relationships for action
Significant experience working in coalitions, or strong working relationships with a cross-section of civil rights, education, and business groups, including playing a leading role, as well as leading from behind
Demonstrated success working with the media
Demonstrated success in communicating to a range of audiences, including policymakers, advocates, educators, families, community members, and business leaders
Demonstrated success designing and executing advocacy campaigns
Demonstrated success in generating advocacy-relevant tools and materials
