The National Consumers League, America’s oldest consumer advocacy organization, seeks a highly qualified and dedicated candidate with expertise in the areas of food safety and nutrition to serve as the organization’s next Linda Golodner Food Safety and Nutrition Fellow. The Fellow serves as the head of NCL’s food safety and nutrition division and works on a broad range of food safety, nutrition, truth-in-advertising, and alcohol-related issues. The Fellow works directly with the League’s Executive Director to determine and execute the policy and organizational agendas for the division

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Drafting letters to federal agencies on a range of food safety and truth-in-advertising issues.

Advocating for the passage of food-safety and nutrition related legislation and for the creation and enforcement of consumer-friendly regulations.

Identifying and drawing attention to truth-in-advertising violations.

Serving as an active member of several food safety and nutrition coalitions.

Staying abreast of current developments in the division’s areas of interest.

Leading project teams for investigations and other one-time projects in the areas of food safety and truth-in-advertising.

Writing articles and blog posts for NCL and other publications as opportunities arise.

Speaking at conferences and conducting interviews as opportunities arise.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Demonstrated commitment to the public interest and to the philosophy and goals of NCL.

Bachelor’s degree and at least three years of experience in nonprofit advocacy or policy work; candidates with less experience will ideally possess an advanced legal or policy-related degree.

Detail-oriented self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and a sense of humor.

Very strong written and oral communication skills.

Outstanding organizational and time management skills; ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines.

Routinely display professionalism and discretion; proven ability to exercise good judgement on a consistent basis.

LifeSmarts Outreach Coordinator

The National Consumers League seeks a LifeSmarts Outreach Coordinator for our LifeSmarts Program with a strong commitment to public interest and consumer education. The League is a 118-year-old national nonprofit, that advocates on behalf of consumers and workers on a range of issues including labor rights and consumer protections, telecommunications and fraud, healthcare, food and drug safety, consumer education for youth, and product safety.

 

The Outreach Coordinator will work with the LifeSmarts Program Director and the LifeSmarts Program Coordinator to carry out the LifeSmarts program, which educates middle school and high school students on a wide range of consumer knowledge. The Outreach Coordinator reports to the LifeSmarts Program Director and has no direct reports.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

 

Plan and conduct LifeSmarts outreach across the country, presenting LifeSmarts at national conferences, meetings, and exhibits, and crafting workshops and training webinars.

Build Partnerships at the state and local level, with a focus on recruiting and sustaining LifeSmarts state programs and coalitions.

Market the LifeSmarts program at the state and national level, including implementing a social media strategy for the program, producing ongoing messaging, and assisting in creation of a marketing strategy to attract new markets, especially under-served populations.

Create competition collateral including writing questions, composing competition scripts, designing educational activities, producing scoreboards and other materials, and managing the LifeSmarts database.

Work in concert with the LifeSmarts team to plan and staff the National LifeSmarts Championship held each year in April.

Assist with maintenance of website work, including serving as the “Help Desk” for the program, creating pages, forms, and competition resources, and making updates on an ongoing basis.

Work with the LifeSmarts team and development staff to seek funding for state programs and the national LifeSmarts program.

Manage and grow the LifeSmarts Alumni Association.

Conduct national LifeSmarts competitions embedded in partner organizations.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Bachelor’s Degree required (an education degree a plus)

Experience working with youth groups and extracurricular program design

Comfortable working across diverse communities

Motivated self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills

An outgoing personality that enjoys interacting with educators and students

A good working knowledge of consumer education, non-profit advocacy, and ideally the LifeSmarts program (www.lifesmarts.org)

Competency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and WordPress expected.

Ease in public speaking a must.

Some travel expected.

Other duties as assigned.
