Summary

American Progress has an immediate opening for the position of Special Assistant for Health Policy. American Progress’ Health Policy team is working to defend the Affordable Care Act, or ACA, from efforts to repeal it; defend the Medicaid program from cuts and other proposals that would negatively affect low-income beneficiaries; and develop ideas on a range of issues, including prescription drug pricing.

The Special Assistant is an essential member of the team and is largely responsible for providing administrative support and research. The Special Assistant will organize meetings, manage event-related details, proofread and edit documents, and provide research support on a broad range of health policy issues. The right candidate will have an interest in health policy—and knowledge of and familiarity with the ACA is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an assistant to the Vice President and Managing Director for Health Policy.
  • Provide administrative support for the Health Policy team, including scheduling appointments, planning events and meetings, and proofreading materials for publication.
  • Provide background research and otherwise support staff with drafting reports, articles, op-eds, and speeches on a wide range of health policy issues.
  • Coordinate with the Art and Editorial teams to prepare upcoming products for publication.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements and qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree—economics, public policy, public health, political science, or related field preferred.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent research and quantitative skills.
  • Proven ability to multitask, prioritize, and organize in a fast-paced environment, both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

All applicants must submit a cover letter which includes a summary of why the Affordable Care Act is critical to our society. The summary should be no longer than three paragraphs. The cover letter should be no longer than two pages.
