The Vera Institute of Justice, founded in 1961, is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, technical assistance, and demonstration projects to assist leaders in government and civil society examine justice policy and practice, and improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera has offices in New York City, Washington, DC, Los Angeles, and New Orleans, and its projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world. The Vera Institute of Justice seeks an intern interested in nonprofit program management and strategy development to assist the director of programs and strategy with projects to enhance the wide-ranging programmatic work of the institute and foster innovation. 




The primary responsibilities of the intern will be to provide research, analysis, writing, and other forms of support for a variety of short and long-term initiatives. These initiatives are designed to advance strategic thinking and planning among Vera’s programmatic units and explore new methods, partnerships, or interventions for emerging opportunities. Additional detail about the types of assignments will be discussed during the interview process or at the time of appointment.




Currently enrolled in a graduate or professional school program in any discipline that fosters strategic thinking and creativity;

Demonstrated commitment to racial equity and other values at the heart of criminal justice reform;

Ability to work with others effectively and efficiently; and

Strong writing and communications skills.

Individuals who have had direct experience with the criminal, juvenile, or immigration systems are especially welcome to apply.




The intern should be available a minimum of 10 hours per week for 10-12 weeks.


Academic Credit/Compensation


Applicants are encouraged to seek academic credit, and Vera will gladly assist the student in working with the school or program to make arrangements and meet requirements.  For those not receiving academic credit, Vera will compensate at an hourly rate.
