Smart Growth America 

 

Smart Growth America is now hiring a paid Policy Intern to support programs within our Policy Development & Implementation team (PD&I), which focuses on relationships between smart growth strategies and the economic and fiscal health of communities. In the past year, PD&I has worked with over 40 communities across the nation on issues spanning transit-oriented development, economic revitalization, rural and town planning, small-scale manufacturing, and community engagement.

 

This person will assist in research and analysis projects, develop materials to support technical assistance engagements, and provide day-to-day administrative and logistical support. This position may also assist with preparing grant progress reports, writing content for our newsletter and blog, and providing short-term assistance to other programs as required. This position reports to Smart Growth America’s Vice President for Economic Development.

 

Core responsibilities

 

Researching and contributing to case studies, tools, and reports related to economic development and transit-oriented development;

Preparing grant applications and progress reports;

Coordinating logistics to support the development and planning of events and workshops;

Producing compelling content for our blog and newsletter;

Providing administrative support to the team.

 

Requirements

This position requires a motivated, intuitive, detail-oriented person with excellent writing, research, analytical, and organizational skills, and the ability to coordinate logistics associated with event planning. The ideal candidate will enjoy working in teams, keep outstanding to-do lists, and be comfortable juggling multiple assignment and managing their own time. Familiarity with GIS and Microsoft Excel is a plus.

 

Candidates should have a strong interest in urban planning, economic development, transportation, community growth, or related areas. Candidates should also have at least a bachelor’s degree and an educational background or work experience in public policy, planning, economics, or a related field.

 

Compensation

Interns for this position receive a stipend of $1000 every two weeks. In addition, they will have six days of paid personal leave, and paid leave on all federal holidays that occur within the tenure at Smart Growth America.

 

Timeframe and Location

This position is full-time, 40 hours a week. A commitment of six months is required.
