Description –Job Description

The American Enterprise Institute (AEI) is seeking a media relations and marketing associate, focused on foreign and defense policy, for our media relations and marketing team.

The media relations associate works directly with the executive director of media relations and strategic marketing to develop and execute a media strategy to promote AEI foreign and defense scholars and their work. The employee in this position is responsible for pitching news and editorial interviews with AEI experts and promoting story ideas based on AEI research to print reporters and broadcast journalists. Writing responsibilities include drafting and disseminating pitches and press releases and editing op-eds and other commentaries. Other responsibilities include coordinating interviews between AEI scholars and journalists and fielding daily inquiries from the press. This position promotes AEI scholarship through regular engagement with media, including arranging briefings for reporters on major public policy issues; drafting, editing, and sending out press releases; and contacting media outlets to cover events.

This position requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex policy material into clear, lively, and straightforward prose. Candidates must have a keen interest in policy and must possess the ability to handle multiple tasks in a frequently busy and demanding environment. Experience writing on a deadline, familiarity with AP style, and related work experience is preferred. Strong applicants will have existing contacts among print reporters, national news bureaus, network and cable news outlets, and national radio broadcasters. The ideal candidate must also have the ability to think strategically and plan comprehensive media outreach. A bachelor’s degree in foreign policy, international relations, history, political science, economics, English, government, journalism, or a related field is preferred.

We offer a stimulating and harmonious work environment and excellent benefits. Qualified applicants should submit an online application to www.aei.org/jobs, complete with a resume, cover letter, and 500-word writing sample on any topic.
