Description – Overview:

New America’s Open Technology Institute seeks enthusiastic, motivated law students or individuals with equivalent experience for multiple full-time internships during summer 2017 in our Washington, DC office. We’re looking for people who are passionate about tech policy and eager to learn about complex issues in a rapidly-changing environment. Applicants should be currently enrolled in an accredited law school, have recently graduated law school, be doing graduate-level work in public policy and technology, or have recently done graduate-level work in public policy and technology. Internships are paid or for credit.

New America is a think tank and civic enterprise committed to renewing American politics, prosperity, and purpose in the Digital Age. The Open Technology Institute works at the intersection of technology and policy to ensure that every community has equitable access to digital technology and its benefits. We promote universal access to communications technologies that are both open and secure, using a multidisciplinary approach that brings together advocates, researchers, organizers, and innovators. Open Technology’s Wireless Future project focuses on mobile broadband, spectrum policy and mobile market competition with a goal of ubiquitous, fast and affordable wireless connectivity for all.


  • Qualified interns may have the opportunity to author or co-author blog posts, articles, research papers, as well as FCC and other regulatory filings. Interns will also have the opportunity to attend educational events in Washington, DC, and to accompany OTI staff members attending meetings in Congress and administrative agencies.
  • Contribute research, writing, and technical expertise (as appropriate) to regulatory filings, policy papers and other projects on a range of Internet policy issues, including but not limited to net neutrality, broadband access and adoption, wireless spectrum, cybersecurity, encryption, government surveillance, Internet governance, consumer privacy;
  • Conduct in-depth research and writing on a variety of topics;
  • Identify and analyze emerging issues in tech policy;
  • Assist with administrative tasks and event staffing;
  • Other tasks as directed.


  • Ideal candidates for the internship position will possess the following characteristics:
  • Current law student at accredited school, recent law school graduate, an individual doing graduate level work in public policy and technology, or have recently done graduate-level work in public policy and technology;
  • Demonstrated interest in relevant policy work;
  • Proven research and analytical skills;
  • Excellent legal and policy writing skills;
  • Acute attention to detail;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, OpenOffice / NeoOffice or Google Docs;
  • Comfort discussing legal or policy issues with non-expert audiences;
  • Technical knowledge of Internet related tools and infrastructure a plus.
