Description –

The External Affairs team amplifies American Progress’ policy voice by forging relationships with progressive groups, think tanks, scholars, community leaders, and elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels. The department raises awareness of the organization and its work, while connecting staff with progressive allies.

External Affairs interns learn many of the basic skills it takes to work at a progressive nonprofit from a front-row seat. The External Affairs team is looking for students with interest in all of the areas listed below. Interns will also collaborate with External Affairs-related policy teams, including Half in Ten, LGBT Progress, and the Crime and Firearm Policy team. Ideal candidates should have a strong interest in the intersection of policy and outreach.

Government affairs and coalition relations

The Government Affairs team advances American Progress’ policies at the federal, state, and local levels. In addition to working with elected leaders and their staff, American Progress strives to partner with other organizations that advocate for progressive goals and priorities. Interns are needed for projects such as short web-based research assignments, contact management, tracking legislation, and providing briefing materials on topics as assigned. Ideal candidates will have strong research and writing skills, as well as an interest in legislative processes.

Constituent relationship management and email marketing

The Constituent Relationship Management, or CRM, team manages the development of American Progress’ CRM system and related technologies. The Email team is responsible for American Progress’ email marketing and dissemination. This team needs assistance with the email marketing portfolio, maintenance of the organization’s contact database, research to improve American Progress’ outreach capabilities, as well as administrative and list maintenance tasks. Ideal candidates will have technical experience with a CRM platform, particularly Salesforce, and email marketing.

Other duties may include conducting targeted research and reporting on policy meetings, seminars, hearings, and lectures. Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to write on the subject of their choice either as a contributor to a larger final piece or as an individual author of a column for the website.

Eligibility: All high school, undergraduate, master's level, Ph.D., and J.D. students are eligible to apply. People are also eligible if they are a veteran or a recent college graduate within six months of graduation.

All summer interns work full time and a minimum of 8 weeks, although 10 weeks is preferred. During the fall, winter, and spring, part-time students are accepted, but interns must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week. International students must be able to provide documentation that shows they are allowed to work in the United States.
