Position Description

RAND is looking for Sociologists to work across a number of policy-relevant research areas. These areas cluster around population, demography, and the life course; health and health care; criminal and civil justice; public safety; the military and national defense; environment and natural resources; education; and, economics, labor, employment, and inequality. RAND units are looking to grow in these areas as well as expand our reach into new domains of policy-relevant research.

Quantitative and qualitative methodological skill sets are sought, which could include expertise in one or more of the following: survey methodology, causal analysis, longitudinal analysis, demographic methods, focus group, interview, and observational methodologies. RAND is also interested in innovative methodological approaches to research.

We are particularly interested in individuals with expertise in sociology of occupations and the labor market, population and demographic methods, justice policy, manpower and training, organizational behavior, and science and technology.

Candidates will have opportunities to receive appointments and teach in the Pardee RAND Graduate School and collaborate with researchers across RAND units (e.g., Labor and Population; Health; Justice, Infrastructure, and Environment; Education; and National Security).

Qualifications

All research positions at RAND require excellent analytic skills, the ability to communicate clearly and effectively in English, both orally and in writing; the ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team; and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity.

Candidates at the mid-career level should also possess a promising record of peer-reviewed publications, experience in obtaining external research funding, and an interest in leading and participating in multidisciplinary research teams.

Candidates at the senior level should possess a distinguished research record, a proven ability to attract significant research funding (i.e., large-scale research projects and teams), a strong record of peer-reviewed publications, a willingness to provide mentoring for more junior researchers, and the skills to lead multidisciplinary research teams.

Education Requirements

PhD in Sociology, demography or related field.

Demonstrated research skills and a strong interest in empirical analyses related to public policy.

Experience

Applicants should have at least 5-7 years of experience in an academic or non-academic research setting.

Location

Preference for RAND’s Santa Monica, CA, Boston, MA, and Pittsburgh, PA offices, although the Arlington, VA office may also be considered.
